This is probably most interesting (and I mean that in a good way) Thai restaurant in NYC -- an authentic, rotating selection of Southern-style Thai dishes.

I had the garlic fried pork (almost like pork candy), the ground pork (tasted just like it did in Thailand, sinus-clearing level of spice) and the fried fish with peppers and eggplant (tender fish, although the eggplant was my favorite part of the dish).

I took my food to go and found the portion generous -- enough for a large and small meal.

A second review- showed up today (a saturday) maybe at like around 2, right after crew practice. It was a little more crowded on this day, but I was still able to get a seat at the table. I tried one new item this time, and while it was good, I think I'll try something else next time. It was the chicken curry. One suggestion I might make is that they should consider using boneless meat instead of the bone stuff, since my pieces of chicken hardly had any meat on them. Still, using bone in pieces of meat is the asian way, so I'm not sure this will change in the near future.

The spice levels here are kind of odd actually. I believe the color of the item name is supposed to correlate with the heat level (green: not spicy, yellow: medium, orange: very spicy). The problem is that some of the items with the orange label aren't spicy at all, like the curry chicken.

An order of one item costs $10.60 (kind of a strange price), in case you were wondering. I think I'm gonna start getting stuff to go from here more often. Remember, cash only...

I have been saying that I am going to try Khao Kang for so long and I finally made it a visit. In fact, it was so delicious I visited twice the past two weeks and I don't usually eat at the same place multiple times a month.

Khao Kang is like a Thai version of those 5$ pick three places in Manhattan Chinatown and food courts in Flushing. I love their first dish which is pork. At Khao Kang, you can pick 2 or 3 Thai dishes over rice. When they say it's spicy, they really do mean its SPICY. I love spicy food and I could not handle it. It burns in the throat and feels like fire in your mouth. I learned to only get one spicy item each meal here. Even so, their food is delicious. They have a lot of seating and have self serve water, the staff is also very kind and welcoming. Their Longan drink was a bit weird but tasted alright. Not something I really like. However, their Thai Tea was superb and I would definitely recommend it.

tl;dr - try one spicy item at a time, it's really spicy if you get three! Thai ice tea is super good. usually, there is a lot of paid parking around, 2/3 quarters will get you through your meal.

You don't judge a book by its cover. You don't judge a hole in the wall eatery by it decor.

Khao Kang is easily one of the top Thai restaurants in NYC in terms of the authenticity of their food.
This place doesn't give you the nice environment you would look for to take your date (go to Khao Nom next door for that!). This place doesn't give you table service. This place makes you line up like you are in a cafeteria to order. The menu doesn't change much (thank god bc I love a certain dish here) and it could be a tad intimidating to order.

But -- BUT -- once you had their food. There is no going back. You will get hooked. And none of the above matters.

I got there every time I wanted something real and something unpretentious. I go there for their shrimp vermicelli noodles, spicy fried fish, and vegetables.

They hit the spot and I am a happy person!
The three dishes combo is $10 with change. Generous portion size. Friendly staff to help you whenever you have a question.

Ooh did I tell you -- check out their desserts. They are quick unique and real! Just like what I had when I was in Thailand. :)

    Keep it up Khao Kang.

$9.50 for a plate of rice with three sides? Heck yeah, sign me up!

We were SO excited to try out Khao Kang a few days ago after having visited Khao Nom (sister restaurant) some weeks prior.

They have over 12 choices of dishes to select from. Since we were never there and there were so many choices, they asked if I wanted some recommendations (I appreciated that so much, thank you).

    I ended up getting:
    - fried garlic pork -- SO FREAKING GOOD- sweet and well seasoned, ugh I can smell and taste it all the way from home. It reminded us of moo ping. Honestly, I cannot rave about this enough. So tasty. Generous proportion. If you can have pork, you must try this. | 5/5
    - mung bean noodles (aka glass noodles) -- wow, this was so fragrant! It had this wonderful sesame/fish sauce smell to it that was as my boyfriend said "borderline intoxicating" ...he was low key judging me for choosing that dish but then he discovered how great it was and stole a great chunk of it ._. SO GOOD. It also came with some pieces of shrimp (generous amount too!). Nothing else much to say...definitely one of our favorites. | 5/5
    - chive/egg/shrimp combo -- even if you hate veggies, you'll probably love this dish. | 5/5

    The boyfriend got the following
    - green chicken curry -- "it was spicy but tasty spicy"; it contained bamboo shoots and other veggies and had a slight kaffir lime smell to it. Overall, it was a nice balance of sweet, salty and spicy | 4.5/5
    - spicy minced pork with green beans -- contains Thai chilies, fragrant and very tasty (boyfriend's type of spicy he likes). If you love spicy food, this is a must get for you | 4.5/5
    - spicy fried fish -- this was the one I actually liked the least. It was good, but I feel that it lacks something. It does come with a few pieces of eggplant :) | 3.8/5

We also got the grass jelly drink (nice chunks of herbal jelly) and thai iced tea. They were both so delectable. The boyfriend decided to get an extra drink after all our food-- the longan juice. It tasted a bit odd to him at first (he said it tasted like cane juice with longan) but that it was very sweet.

Such delicious food for an affordable price (boyfriend said WOW probably like 100x) at a nice, laid back cafeteria-like restaurant. Great experience. Cannot wait to revisit!
